Haase’s Shoe Store & Young Folks Shop has been serving the Greater New Orleans area for 95 years. Started in 1921 by Boris Conrad Haase and his wife Della, this family owned shoe store has been in its Oak Street location for decades. Haase’s is one of the longest running businesses on Oak Street. Mr. Haase ran the family shoe store until his death in 1958, then his son Boris Jr. (Buster) took over the business. In 1968, Boris Jr. passed away and his sister, Vera Mae Haase Caliva, stepped up to run the store with her two sons Bruce and Kevin.
Throughout the years, all of the Caliva children worked in Haase’s Shoe Store & Young Folks Shop learning the family business. Bruce and his wife Debbie worked with Vera Mae running the store until he retired in 2010. Soon after, Vera Mae retired in 2011 and the business was sold to her youngest son Kevin and his wife Judy. On March 21, 2015, Vera Mae Haase Caliva passed away at the age of 98. She died peacefully surrounded by her family, leaving the Haase legacy to Kevin and Judy.
Judy Caliva has been running the store with her husband Kevin for four years now. The retired Holy Name of Jesus teacher loves interacting with the children and makes sure Haase’s is not only a shoe and clothing store, but also a learning environment. The store stocks a wide range of Melissa & Doug toys to keep children learning while playing.
At Haase’s, we take pride in our store and work with every customer as if they are a part of the family. We specialize in shoe fitting for all sizes and widths, there is a play area for children to be entertained while their parents shop and every kid leaves with a special Haase’s green balloon.
The monogram department allows shoppers to customize their Haase’s purchases. We have dresses, overalls and johnjohns for children that are monogramable, as well as burp cloths, Paty gowns, hats, bloomers, backpacks, garment bags and more! We also do monogramming for outside items as well. Lydia Steele and Pam Waldron work with every customer one-on-one to make sure their items are treated with gentle care, and that every stitch is perfect.
